Steps to starting home business in California (los angeles county)?
So for the last few days I have been researching like CRAZY, yet feel so lost as to what to do! I would l like to start a business at home/online selling handmade items. So far I e-mailed my county tax specialist and was told I do not need a business license for a home based business, but I will need a sellers permit. I am also looking into a DBA since I want to use my name + a word for my business. Would those 2 documents allow me to create a website? sell my items with my business name on my business cards, brochures, tags, etc? I know an LLC would protect my assets but would DBA & sellers permit be enough? Thanks in advance!
Also, I live in an unincorporated area of los angeles – if that makes any difference! 
Sounds like you’ve put in a lot of energy already!
My recommendation is to not worry so much about the licenses and stuff right now. Just start out as a sole proprietorship. Afterall, unless you become successful enough (yay!), who is going to sue you?
From personal experience, it feels like a waste of time and money to do the legal stuff all the way without knowing that I actually have a business. The hardest part of the business is finding customers. If you want to start your business online, I really recommend the LaunchBit Startup Guide.
Once you have customers who want what you’re offering and your sales really start going, then I would go back and think about the legal structure of the company. But for now, just jump in! Good luck!
