Filing Online Business Complaints

filing online business complaints
Better Business Bureau Process?

I want to file a complaint , about a restaurant, with the Better Business Bureau. What’s the process? I only want to file a complaint & be done with it. Will they continue to contact me regarding the issue after I file the complaint? Once I file the online complaint, I don’t want to deal with it any longer.

First, understand what the BBB is. They are an individual non-profit organization. They are not a government agency of any sort.

When they receive a complaint, they forward it to the company. If the company is a member of the BBB, they are required to respond within a particular period of time. That response may not be to remedy the problem, but simply to acknowledge your complaint and to give their side of the story.

The BBB will then let you know that they received a response. Except in certain rare situations, they will consider the matter closed. They will note, in their files, that a complaint was received. If they feel the response was sufficient, they will note that the matter is closed.

Unless a member company receives a significant number of complaints or doesn’t comply with the policies of the BBB, nothing happens. The worst that can happen to a member is that they will be kicked out… meaning that they are no longer able to claim that they are a member.

For non-members, absolutely nothing happens. The BBB does not sue companies nor do they take any sanctions or actions. With non-members, all they do is trade letters back and forth.

So, I have to ask why you want to send a letter, but then not even be notified of a response? If that’s the case, you might as well not send the BBB the letter. If you ask that the BBB not contact you regarding the matter, it carries even less weight and they are not likely to even bother forwarding it to the company. Without giving the company a chance to respond, they are unlikely to even make a note in their file.
