Pricing your fiction book?
I have just recently finished writing my book and am now going back through editing and polishing. I have the delux edition of writers market so that I could get the free 1 year subscription to the internet site but I don’t want to activate it until I am completely done editing and polishing. I want to be informed when I do get an agent and they start shopping my book around to publishing companies. Can anyone tell me what an appropriate proce for an action adventure/Sci-fi fiction novel should go for? It is around 117,025 words. Thanks for any help you can give.
Why is over 100k words harder to sell? I thought it would be better to have a longer book. Not that that was what I was shooting for it simply took that much to tell the story. It’s only 17 chapters though.
Price, as in what you want each copy to sell for? Or what you think your advance/royalty rate should be?
The first question is not up to you at all. The publisher sets the per unit price.
The second you have some control over, but not much. The boilerplate contract from the publisher will mention both your advance and your royalty rate. You may be able to negotiate a better rate through your agent, but on your own, you’d stand little chance. Try to get too clever and the publisher will drop you in favor of an author who will more than happily take that space on the bookshelf.
At over 117K words, though, you may have a difficult time selling your story, even in SFF. Anything over 100K is a harder sell. Not impossible, just more difficult.

Edit: Formatting. Sad fact of life is that most off-set print runs aren’t set to print ultra-long books without extra formatting, so it costs more to print them.
