Satellite Internet And Google Restrictions In China

The virtual age of satellite internet has enabled such international information exchange and communication that we have truly become a global culture.  Large corporations in various countries take part in a grand scale exchange that creates more and more links between nations and individuals all over the world.  Satellite internet broadband connection enables the modern person to access information, media, social networks, etc. with such speed and efficiency that have never before been possible.  However, there has been recent controversy regarding the politics of information censorship that has broader implications for international relations.

China constitutes nearly one sixth of the world’s population, continually growing as a world power and pushing forward into the future of technology and development.  It seems to be on the cutting edge, increasing in economic potential and exploding with production.  Many of China’s inhabitants have access to a rapid satellite internet broadband and have joined the cyber age with full force, constituting some 350 million internet users.

Internet censorship, however, has become an increasingly controversial issue in China.  Some websites are banned or restricted and others have been caught in a negotiation battle with the Chinese government over demands to comply with Chinese standards.  After facing pressure to conform to these norms, GoogleInc, the largest information provider in the world, recently pulled out of China.

This issue is interesting and multifaceted.  The American company disagrees on a theoretical basis with filtering information access to millions of internet users, and ultimately refused to comply with China’s censorship standards.  This may be a disadvantage for Google, as they are leaving a huge population of their previous users to their competitors.  However, the situation may prove to be more problematic for China.  GoogleInc proves to be a considerably innovative and efficient company, providing a template that is essentially copied by many other search engines.  Now that Google has pulled out, the Chinese competitors will be left to their own devices, lacking motivation, and may have difficulty flourishing in the information market.

The situation may also speak to the state of relations between the U.S. and China.  The decision to withdraw was a fairly bold move by Google and was no doubt backed by the American government.  Beyond a disagreement of censorship, this is an ideological battle, which originally tried to instate Western ideals in the East and eventually terminated in failure.  China’s agenda is also intertwined with internal politics.  The Internet is not necessarily a free space of unlimited exchange, rather a reflection of what falls into Chinese political favor.  This means that to be a viable Internet contingent, companies must effectively collaborate with the Chinese government.  Perhaps the information acquisition industry in China will not suffer on a grand scale, but the break with Google may reflect certain political tension and irrevocable ideological differences.
