How to set up a model agency in the UK?

am with an agency nd I have only had minor jobs and if I never get any work in modeling or when I become too old to model, I think i’d enjoy running an agency. I dont live in an area where there are any large firms that employ people but I know that I will need to have a business partner who is good with photography or I need to learn. I know all agencies need to make contacts with firms that use models, but there is next to nothing on the internet with help or guidance to running an agency. I have researched the market and I am hoping to move to Leeds this year or next year where there are a few including one of my agents.

Help such as ‘dont bother, there are enough agencies’ or ‘the credit crunch’ is not helpful. But HELPFUL answers would be very much appreciated xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks

Brandy

Running an agency is not easy and even those stared by top agents from other firms rarely survive

The first thing you need to do is get a job in an established agency, even an unpaid internship, to see how things really work. Speak to your agency and see if you can spend 1 day a week helping out, answering phones, etc. Get to know who the major players are. Listen to bookers on the phone to find out how they book their models. Find out how they got the clients they have now. Look at the type of contracts they have with their models. And most importantly, how are they dealing with the economic situation when there are fewer modeling jobs out there – fewer designers showing during London Fashion Week, fewer ad campaigns being shot, fewer promotional events, fewer magazines being published, etc, etc.

Most people running agencies have been in the business for years, usually working for a larger agency for 10+ years. That’s how long it takes to build up enough personal contacts to support a business.
