15 Tips: Internet Marketing and Your Online Credibility
There are hundreds of thousands of Internet Marketers online today and emerging into the future. Internet Marketing (IM) is booming in this challenging economy!
Is there a problem with this trend? Do you see or foresee a problem with this type of sole proprietor to small business growth?
What about the sincere, genuine credibility of these folks who promote their products and services over the Internet (World Wide Web) and via the numerous media available to them to do so?
This essay is not about bashing any of my fellow (male and female) Internet Entrepreneurs at all. But this article is indeed about offering some tips for gaining and maintaining your credibility as an online businessperson. The following tips are in no certain order, end all, or cure all because each is of equal importance:
Tip 1:
Always present and carry yourself in a professional manner online and offline. This includes everything from what you write, speak, and to your personal photo and/or logo you use online.
Tip 2:
Your spelling and grammar matter! Please know, understand, and promote good grammar in any language. For example, know when to use: your or you’re, then or than, and the correct tense of verbs.
Tip 3:
Remember to spell check…. “Typos” don’t sell!
Tip 4:
Can the Spam (email)! Do not send promotional emails to your subscribers 24/7/365 as so many of you do! Why? Because there is a very friendly button named DELETE!
Tip 5:
If your email or newsletter subscribers send you an email asking questions for additional information, then please respond in a timely manner.
Tip 6:
Do some research about your prospects before blasting your marketing promotions—because you might find that these folks are your biggest competitors!
Tip 7:
Social Networkers: For those of you who follow others just to get a follow back—STOP IT…please! Do you know or realize that you are just wasting the time of these online businesspeople? Many of us do follow those and accept follows because these people are interested in our niche and sub-niche….
Tip 8:
If you are so inclined to review products or services, then please have the wherewithal to have used those which you have actually tried!
Tip 9:
Your credentials: This is about YOU and YOUR credibility. You should at least be knowledgeable about the products and services you promote—otherwise, you are just another run of the mill Internet Peddler. Formal degrees, certifications, and OJT (On the Job Training or experience) actually with regard to your product offerings will always add to your online presence as well as credibility. Well before deciding that it’s time for you to strike out on your own, at least have some type of sales and marketing experience.
Tip 10:
Research the products that you plan to promote before launching your marketing campaigns.
Tip 11:
Keep in mind that not all marketing systems work for everyone. Why? Answer: There are many variables to consider, such as Demographics, Market Saturation, Competition, Advertising, etc. Did you conduct any Market Research to determine whether “your products” fulfill a need, solve a problem, etc. that many potential customers might have? Have you even gotten off your duff to contact potential customers or clients outside of your comfort zone of immediate family and friends?
Tip 12:
“ABC” = “Always Be Closing…” (per Alec Baldwin in the 1992 film “Glengarry Glen Ross”) LOL! Yes, there was a time when this sales advice to one’s sales force shoved down the throats of many based on 500% greed and not a care for the customer or client! And yes, I know because I lived through this and was taught this as a very young
and budding “Insurance Man”! Today, you better think twice because the “olden days” of going door-to-door and attempting the “used car, aluminum siding, etc.” sales approach does not work and will cheapen you as a so-called “Sales Professional”. Today, “The Name of the Game” (1968-1971, what a great TV show starring Gene Barry, Robert Stack, and Tony Franciosa) is all about you having gained a professional and learned mix of consultative, solutions, and relationship selling techniques (on- and offline).
Tip 13:
Internet Marketing IS NOT easy! You probably will not get rich quickly unless you have created a product or service that no one else has that meets a gigantic need and solves a major problem or two in the marketplace. You must approach your online business just as you would any other brick and mortar business. The same principles of business (i.e., marketing, accounting, management, organizational behavior, business law, micro-economics, professional selling skills, business statistics, etc.) still apply!
Tip 14:
You need a plan—a business and marketing plan! Need I say more?
Tip 15:
You (as a budding newcomer to IM) cannot compete against the infomercials, major media, etc. unless you can afford television, radio, etc. advertising out of the gate. DO NOT think that you have failed when a niche has not worked to earn you money—there’s a good reason and it has nothing to do with you. I will not divulge what I have been monitoring for a little over a year; but when I do present my findings, this information will be posted for free! Just keep this in mind for the meantime, there is link theft, there are vendors who work and/or compete against their affiliates, and there are info product creators who do nothing more than lie, cheat, and steal. Most people who claim that they are making a killing via the web are disclosing the total truth, tend to spin tales of grandeur, spin their wheels 24/7/365 all for naught.
