I think they’re all good business opportunities. However, they all require a high level of trustworthy managers and employees if you don’t plan to be there to watch over operations. Even relatives can sneak a peso or so under your nose.
If you plan to reside in Melbourne while providing the capital for your business in the Philippines, your best option among the three may be the junkshop business.
The Jeepeny or Van service sounds good especially in highly populated areas lacking transportation routes. However, if your transporation fare rises due to the rising cost of your gas/deisel and maintenance expenses, you may have a big challenge juggling with the right price that’s affordable to the general public and still profitable for your company.
An Internet Cafe I hear is not profitable as it used to be. Unlicensed operating systems and software installed on machines helped owners reduce their expenses and ultimately profit. However, many Cafe’s over the years have been raided which has reduced the level of software piracy among Internet Cafe’s. The cost of software licenses for multiple workstations has become a roadblock for many owners trying to make a profit.
Working with technology offers an advantage in how to manage your operations but the best advice is for you to have someone run a 4 to 8 week observation upon specific Internet Cafe’s to monitor and log the number of customers and duration they tend to remain in the shop.
This can help you calculate the potential revenue and expenses a single shop may shoulder in order to make a profit. Take that profit and divide it in half to project your potential earnings.
In contrast, a junk shop may have moderate to slow sales but inventory can be simple to track and manage. You can buy your products from a thrift store, bring them with you when you return to the Philippines, or pack them into balikbayan boxes to refill your inventory of junk. Of course, you wouldn’t call them junk…consider them as used discounted items instead and many customers will find them useful especially at bargain prices.
You can start with a spreadsheet and begin writing down the list of expenses and potential revenue. Determine their values through friends, contacts, or internet, and develop the proper calculations. Don’t forget to write down notes related to potential liabilities and risk as items to weigh and consider. Then adjust them as necessary to estimate your potential profit.
Good luck!
