Online Business Savvy People: What are things that are selling in this economy?
I’m thinking about setting up a mini side business. I was wondering if anyone knows how to find out what are the most popular items that are selling online these days (brand name things, hair stuff, soap, sheets, envelopes, computers, software, whatever!)? Is there a website that can show me statistics? I don’t mean to sound pessimistic, but without any facts it just seems like it’s a hit or miss business venture with the way the economy is going. I’m trying to think of what people need, but that’s so random. Please do not say sex and hard work lol I know those two things sell and I’m not going towards the sex direction. Thank you for your shared knowledge!
I tried selling things many years ago, that was hard. I was a powerseller on ebay before they changed their policies and put me out of business. But I wasnt doing as good as I am now from NOT selling things. The best ways to make money online, is either selling non-tangible items (ebooks, downloadable guides, sounds etc.), or from advertising. I do mostly advertising. Heres a basic guide of what I mean:
#1 set up a website or blog
#2 go to google and look at their advertising program called Adsense
#3 put adsense ads on your website or blog
#4 send people there, 1 or 2 out of every 30 people on average will click ads. If you send 300 people to your site in one day, chances are that 10 to 20 of them will click ads. You get paid more for each ad click if the ads are for certain subjects. For example, I have a blog about laser hair removal, and if someone goes there to learn about removing hair with laser surgery, and if they click an ad, I get about $.80 cents to $3.00 per click. Now I also have blogs about entertainment things, such as movies. I only get about .04 cents to .20 cents per click, because its easier to advertise things like movies. Not as many people are looking for info about hair removal, so when they do click an ad, that click is worth alot more to the advertiser, who pays google, and then google pays you. The trick is getting people to visit your site, and making the site boring enough to where they are more likely to click on an ad instead of looking at your site. Getting paid for each click may not seem like much, but it really adds up when you have thousands of people going to your sites.
You can also put affiliate links on your site, either next to your google ads, or in place of the google ads. Affiliate links are links that lead to other websites, just like the ads. The main difference is that with affiliate links, you only get paid when someone buys something from the site it leads them to. But you make alot more. With google ads, you get paid per click, but with affiliate links, you get paid per commission. I have one website where I send people to, and it has affiliate links for “watch tv on your computer”. I think its like $29.99 if they buy it. So they go to my site, then click on the link sometimes, and if they buy it for $29.99, I get like $4.99 for referring them. All big companies have affiliate programs, even yahoo and ebay. Go to the bottom of ebay’s website and look where it says “affiliates”. Learn from there.
Selling physical items is a hassle. You have to worry about returns and shipping things and postage and all these hassles.
