Oops! Did I choose the wrong major?

This might be more of a rant or vent than a question, but I’m posting to see the responses. I’m currently a senior accounting major hellbent on graduating with a 3.4 overall GPA. I’m enrolled in tax, intermediate accounting II, and a few business core classes.

So far, the accounting program hasn’t really taught me much. My tax professor is earning his doctorate from an online university, one of those unaccredited programs such as Phoenix.

I start an internship with the City’s Financial department tomorrow, which I’m a little anxious about. I feel that my interest and my credentials don’t allow me to be anything more than a bookkeeper, mainly because of my mediocre GPA (Mother had cancer, took difficult classes).

Is the real world accounting much different than the bond valuation drills we learn in some accounting courses?

Should I have gone the IT route or maybe became a nurse?

Would love to hear any opinions.

Don’t worry. Most of what you learn in college does not apply to your actual real world job; at least not at first. Even in focused professions such as engineering or computer science where you would think that school taught you “job skills” it is still like that. The companies understand that they must teach you the specific software, tools, and procedures for daily life on the job.

The college degree gives you a broad based education that allows you to connect higher level concepts in your field and most importantly to think critically in unfamiliar situations. As you rise in your profession you will start to see how the things you learned in college are relevant.
