Incentives to work in a tiny company?

I own and run a 3- people international trade office in central New Jersey (Basking Ridge). One of my assistant will quit the work since she find a better opportunity at a big company. I need to hire another person with experiences ( 3 years) but have a lot of difficulties. I am looking for someone with college degree, bright, organized and dependable.

What would be the big incentives I can offer to attract good employees to work at a small company, or what are the good approaches and suggestions to find good employees? What type of people would feel comfortable working in a tiny company and be happy?

I tried online ad and local newspapers and it simply doesn’t work. Qualified candidates showed little interest while many young students or part-time job seekers do not seem to match the qualifications. Any advice?

You are asking two questions. You already know the advantages of small versus larger companies. Maybe you need to think hard about them and make a list so that they are clear in your mind when you talk with potential candidates. It takes a special person to work for a small company and the trick is to talk with enough people to find the ones who fit this mold. I’d be more concerned with general skills rather than specific skills (unless you really need these). You can train specifics to most intelligent people.

The best way to find candidates is to get out and talk to people. I’ve done it a number of ways: If I meet someone I’m conducting business with I might say something like ” I own a small company and I’m looking for someone to……Does anyone come to mind?” First off the person you are talking to will imagine himself in that position so it is an indirect way to solicit someone. The question could be used if you met a personnel guy at Rotary. He may have just interviewed someone who would not work for them but might work for you.

Another way is the direct method: I used to catch a quick bite in a Skippers Restaurant near my business. I noticed a manager who actually went from table to table checking up on things and asking people if they wanted dessert. After several visits over a couple of months I got to know his name. I went up to him when I was leaving one day, handed him my card, and asked if he planned to work in Skipper’s selling clam chowder the rest of his life? He said no and asked what I had in mind. I told him to call me and we’d get to gether and talk. He did and I hired him. It was the best hire I ever made. He never would have been hired by a big company – never finish college. But, he worked out great for us.

I think my point is that you’ve got to get up off your butt (quit running ads) and go out and talk to people. If you make a point to do this you’ll find what you want.
